PIPE RELINING / GRAVITY PIPE REHABILITATION

Gravity pipe relining is a trenchless rehabilitation technique used to repair and reinforce underground gravity sewer pipes. It involves the insertion of a flexible liner coated with resin into the existing pipe. The liner is then inflated, allowing the resin to adhere to the inner surface of the pipe. After curing, the liner forms a new, durable layer that enhances the structural integrity of the gravity pipe, reducing the need for traditional excavation methods. This approach minimizes disruption, is cost-effective, and extends the lifespan of the sewer system.

Known as trenchless repair, old pipes (or their remnants) are usually left in place while a new pipe is simply formed or pulled inside. With no need to excavate, trenchless relining usually gives clients a more cost-effective and convenient solution.

Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) lining represents a trenchless rehabilitation and restoration method employed in repairing existing pipes. This technique utilizes a textile liner tube and a liquid resin.

The process commences with the wet-out stage, where the textile liner gets impregnated with the resin mixture, consisting of an epoxy base with a pre-determined hardener. Subsequently, the liner is inverted into the pipe using air pressure, positioning the resin on the outside against the existing host pipe wall.

Following inversion or pull-in-place (PIP), the liner is inflated and allowed to dry, employing methods such as ambient, hot water, or steam curing. Throughout this period, the curing agent activates the resin, causing it to harden and resulting in a snug, smooth, and corrosion-resistant new pipe wall.

If needed, a robotic cutting device or chain sling may be introduced into the newly lined pipe to reinstate any branch line connections.

To determine the appropriate process for a specific project or scope, categorizing piping systems into pressurized and non-pressurized systems is the most straightforward approach.
